Girl Scout Cookie Time

Waistlines beware!  It's time once again for Girl Scout cookies sales.  All over the Mid Michigan area, young ladies will be selling the $3.50 boxes of goodness to supporters and cookie fans alike.  If you haven't had a lady visit your doorstep or workplace with an order form, you can find a sales schedule here:

http://cookielocator.littlebrownie.com/

This year the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan Chapter is taking on a special project during their sale time.   They are encouraging customers to make donations of purchased cookies to their Feed the Children Outreach that will send them off to Haiti.  You may drop off donations at the Main office located at 1223 Turner Street in Lansing.

This year I may not actually feel as bad about eating so many cookies, because I can send just as many off to hungry children in Haiti.  Imagine that! Supporting the Girl Scouts and children in Haiti with one purchase. For a full list of cookies available visit the link below:

Enjoy!

Cody's Cause

This week I would like to spotlight an issue that hits close to home.  Not quite two years ago, a good friend of mine lost her 14-year-old son to the choking game.  (The object of this game is to experience aspyhxiation.  By restricting oxygen and blood flow to the head, participants experience a "high".)  http://www.chokinggame.net/index.html

Cody learned of this game from school classmates that had been playing it together at parties.  Children usually choose to play this in lieu of drinking and doing drugs, because they feel that the effects wont be as harmful and they can avoid being caught by parents.  This game, however, cost a bright young boy his life.

His mom explained:

"Cody had a summer full of plans. He had just gotten his driver permit in April. His summer was going to include wrestling camps and a youth group camp that only 100 area kids got choosen to go to. Cody was active in our church youth group. He got his varitsty letter for wrestling in his freshmen year."
Since his passing, his family has worked to share his story in hopes of preventing future deaths. They have formed a group called Cody's Cause that travels to local schools for assemblies. They encourage all parents, students and teachers to be educated on the cause.

Please visit the site and consider a donation: http://www.codyscause.com/

Later this year, Cody's family will join together in the Ele's Place 5K Race for the Place:http://www.elesplace.org/
Here is a copy of some of the information Cody's Cause provides to families:www.gaspinfo.com
COMMON BUT DEADLY MISCONCEPTIONS: SCIENTIFIC SURVEY RELEASED 2-2009
90% of youth ages 9 - 18 had already engaged in the activity in groups.
Study revealed more than 40% perceived no danger at all.
Between the years 1990 & 2009 there were 83 deaths and injuries reported in children between the
ages of 6 - 10 (independent reports)

MY KIDS AREN’T AT RISK They’re Good Kids!

Chief ME of N.H.—Dr. Andrews:

“Important brain development researchindicates adolescents, even those ‘good kids’, are hardwired for risk-taking behavior.” Ironically, the group of children most likely to shun tobacco and alcohol may well be the more likely candidates to be playing this game.” If we tell them they’ll do it! They already know! They’re already doing it!

This survey reported all but 0.8% of youth replied that the right information about brain damage, disability and death would make them not try it and it would make them stop.

I look forward to blogging again soon.  In the meantime, plan ahead for Ele's Race.

“The myth that this kind of behavior is engaged in by only troubled youth must be dispelled.”

Kick Off Your New Years Resolution With A 5K
cindy headshotEvery year around this time most of us come up with a New Year’s Resolution that involves fitness, eating healthier, or just generally living better.

The Playmakers race series may be a great place for you to start!  I checked their January calendar, and I found a race called the Super Bowl 5K. While on the Super Bowl 5K Homepage I noticed that the race director is Chuck Block. I met him during another 5K I was a part of and was immediately impressed.
Chuck manages the Michigan Running Foundation and times races for many local events.  Upon contacting him I learned that this is the ninth year they have held this event. In planning a winter event, this day seemed to make great sense.

“Super Bowl Sunday is now a day where many people go to parties to watch the game. Runners like to do something healthy and burn off some calories so then they can go the parties and have a good time," he explained.

The event takes place:

Sunday, February 7th, 2010 10:00 a.m.
Chippewa Middle School in Okemos

The race will begin and end at Chippewa Middle School in Okemos.  All roads are paved, with a course described as "flat and fast".  If you register early, the cost is $17.  All proceeds go towards Okemos Schools running program and running scholarships.  Race Address and Contact Information is on the Playmakers Website:  http://runningfoundation.com/Super_Bowl_5k.html
